What is deducted from a Texas paycheck?
Texas does not have an individual state income tax. Employees can still have federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions, insurance and other benefit deductions taken from each payment.
The federal percentage is a planning input, not a tax bracket calculation. Compare it with the effective withholding shown on a recent payslip.
Deduction treatment differs for income tax, Social Security and Medicare. Traditional 401(k) deferrals reduce income-tax wages but stay in Social Security and Medicare wages; qualifying section 125 benefits reduce all three. Additional Medicare withholding begins when this employer’s Medicare wages exceed $200,000 for the year.
